Why define objectives?
If you ever want to make your dreams come true, you can :
- Cross your fingers and hope to get there one day.
- Define a plan to follow to achieve them.
Which strategy do you think works best?
If you want to climb the Himalayas.
You can:
=> Go to the foot of the mountain and try to find your way to the top.
=> Follow a specific training plan for mountaineering, climb smaller peaks several times before attempting the Himalayas with a guide.
The first one will probably end up in a crevasse or run out of oxygen.
The second one has a great chance to have his selfie at the top
That’s why it’s so important to set goals:
Turn your biggest dreams into small, achievable goals to climb the ladder one step at a time.
Know before you start.
There are three types of lenses:
- Short term (3 and 6 months): A little out of your comfort zone / Easily attainable
- Medium term (1 year / 3 years): Out of your comfort zone / Hard to reach
- Long term (5+ years): Very far from your comfort zone / Completely unreachable
Here we will create a goal for each area:
- Professional Life
- Finance
- Personal life
- Health
- Learning / Hobbie
1 – Define your long-term goals (5 years)
If your goals are not clear. Ask someone close to you to play the game and ask you the questions below:
Setting the scene: You haven’t seen this person for 5 years, it’s 2026 and you’ve achieved all your goals.
- Hey I haven’t seen you in five years; what’s up?
- What is your professional situation?
- Where do you live?
- How are your finances?
- How is your family?
- You have changed physically. What sport do you play?
- What did you learn?
- How do you spend your free time?
- What is your typical day?
- Are you happy? Why?
→ If you don’t have anyone to ask, DM one of the people who liked this tweet and ask each other the questions.
Now it’s time to take the next step and find your “why”.
2 – Find your “Why
It’s hard to reach your goals without a deep reason.
So fill in this blank for each of your long-term goals, by field (finance / health…):
“… [Contribution], so that … [Impact].”
I give you an example below
3 – Put your goals on paper
Now that you have your long-term goals and the reason why you want to achieve them.
It’s time to write them down.
Create a Notion account and duplicate this template. You’ll just have to fill it with your own goals: bit.ly/3rdO7Zn
It is important to fill out this template in order: 5 years / 3 years / 1 year / 6 months / 3 months.
Or sometimes I do it in this order: 5 years / 3 months / 6 months / 1 year / 3 years
This is to start with the big picture and break it down into smaller steps.
4 – Now write for each long-term (5 years) goal, a one-sentence summary, following this template:
- Action : Running
- Specific: The Boston Marathon
- Time: April 21, 2026
The sentence will then look like this:
Run the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2026
Why?
Because you will learn these phrases by heart and repeat them to yourself every day until they are ingrained in your brain.
The goal is to make your subconscious understand the direction in which you are heading.
5 – Tracking your goals
Duplicate this template: bit.ly/3hFtmTq
And put your short-term goals in the chart to motivate you to achieve them.
Renew them every 3 months.
→ You can also break it down into monthly and/or weekly goals.
6 – Find a partner
In order to stay on top of things, it is important to find someone who will keep track of your progress.
A person with whom you will share your goals.
You will be forced to move, because this person will be there to remind you if you give up.
You can also do it publicly to increase the pressure and make sure you really do your best to get there.
I did it in April and I trust you to remind me in due course:
Now you have everything you need to set your own goals.
